Supporting the official Earth Day 2023 theme – ‘Invest in Our Planet’ – and raising awareness on sustainable practices, EssilorLuxottica recently hosted its second annual Sustainability Week from April 17 to 21.
Doing good for employees, customers, consumers and communities while doing good for the planet is at the core of EssilorLuxottica’s Company-wide sustainability program ‘Eyes on the Planet,’ which focuses on strategic pillars that deliver actions for Carbon, Circularity, World Sight, Inclusion and Ethics.
To reiterate its sustainability commitments as well as reflect on progress made and plans for the future, the second annual EssilorLuxottica Sustainability Week took place leading up to Earth Day 2023.
Highlights of EssilorLuxottica Sustainability Week 2023
Throughout the week, live virtual classrooms were hosted on EssilorLuxottica’s Leonardo learning platform to provide progress updates on ‘Eyes on the Planet’ and insight on how sustainability is embedded in EssilorLuxottica’s DNA, while employees engaged in eco-activities globally and locally to help make a difference.
A few highlights are listed below:
- A first interactive virtual class presented Eyes on the Planet: 2022 Highlights plus a deep dive into the program’s five key pillars and how sustainability is connected to the Group’s Mission.
- A second livestream virtual class on How We Are Progressing Toward a Sustainable Future featured guest host Matteo Ward, with examples of how the Group is bringing sustainable innovation and environmental awareness to the market.
- A global-level challenge was set for EssilorLuxottica employees to ‘Invest in our Planet’ and take part in a special collective session dedicated to plogging – a Swedish word meaning to clean up the environment while jogging and staying active. Together, Group employees from 18 countries took part in the challenge, which lasted 12 and a half hours non-stop in total across 10 different time zones, creating a ‘chain effect’ to complete 191 eco-actions and collect an estimated 250 kilograms of garbage.
- In Italy, employees in Milan had the opportunity to enjoy a delicious and healthy sustainable meal created in partnership with Italian star chef Davide Oldani. Focused on reducing waste, the chef used quality ingredients to prepare various finger foods – mostly plant based – plus a dessert that respects the environment and seasonality of ingredients while promoting the well-being of our people.
- In France, group gatherings were organized with employees to discuss the Company’s ‘Eyes on the Planet’ sustainability program and ongoing engagement activities.
- In Portugal, the Group’s MultiOpticas retail banner celebrated Earth Day by planting trees and plants with children from HELPO NGO. In parallel, screenings were conducted with the children, and MultiOpticas offered prescription glasses to those with uncorrected poor vision.
- In the US, water dispensers were installed throughout its Atlanta Service Center to help reduce the use of plastic water bottles and promote a more sustainable workplace.
- The Group’s licensed brand Emporio Armani continued its sustainable journey with the launch of a new Spring/Summer 2023 eyewear collection using bio-based acetate and bio-based nylon fibers.
Going forward, EssilorLuxottica will remain focused on deploying and evolving its ‘Eyes on the Planet’ program, while continuing to raise awareness on the importance of protecting our planet.
