Eyes on World Sight: China recognized for children’s vision health
3 min read

EssilorLuxottica in Greater China recently received three awards in recognition for its continuous efforts in sustainable development and outstanding contributions to improving the vision health of Chinese children and adolescents: the ‘2021 Responsible Brand’, the ‘2021 Excellent CSR Project’ and the ‘2022 Chief Responsibility Officer’. These were attributed respectively from China’s Public Welfare Festival, Century Business Herald and the Global Responsibility Summit.

In China, there are nearly 26 million children in remote areas suffering from vision problems who don’t have access to timely management due to lack of trained professionals and low parental awareness. As a philanthropic organization aimed at improving people’s vision supported by EssilorLuxottica, the Essilor Vision Foundation (EVF) launched the "Seeing the Colorful Childhood" youth myopia prevention and control philanthropic project in 2015, aimed at providing a range of vision care services including eye health education, vision screening and free eyeglasses prescription for students in rural regions, so that they can also enjoy the benefits clear vision brings to their lives.

So far, the "Seeing the Colorful Childhood" project has been implemented in 27 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions across China, holding more than 1,500 public lectures on eye care for students, parents and teachers, providing vision screening for nearly 2.6 million children and adolescents, and donating glasses for more than 200,000 students in need. In 2021, the program served 82,000 students and improved the vision of 28,000 students in 109 schools. On "99 Giving Day" - the annual highlight organized by Tencent Foundation, Essilor Vision Foundation and Nova Vision announced a three-year cooperation, and worked with Ai You Foundation to set up a public donation channel on Tencent’s platform. The partnership aims to benefit 100,000 rural children in the next three years.

In addition to philanthropy commitments, the Company supported the National School of Development at Peking University for the release of the "Report on the Prevention and Control of Myopia among Chinese Children and Adolescents in the Digital Age", calling for vigorous implementation of public policies to tackle the serious myopia issue. EssilorLuxottica also responded to the Optometry Group of the Chinese Medical Association to kick off a version 2.0 of the White Paper on Myopia Management, in order to keep up with the latest trends.

EssilorLuxottica Greater China has implemented its multidimensional CSR strategy in line with the Group’s new Corporate Social Responsibility program called ‘Eyes on the Planet’, announced in July 2021.
