EssilorLuxottica continues to be a strong advocate for good vision on the road
3 min read

The Group’s commitment for safer roads is part of its wider responsibility as the industry leader and Mission to help people around the world "see more and be more”. As part of its advocacy for good vision on the road for safe mobility, EssilorLuxottica has been partnering with various industry-leading players including the United Nations (UN), Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), and 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In May, the Group and the UN Special Envoy for Road Safety announced a partnership to reinforce their commitment to promote good vision on the road, following the UN’s call for its member countries to ensure good vision for all road users in alignment with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. The Group launched an awareness campaign during the UN Global Road Safety Week on May 15 to support the UN’s road safety targets and to highlight the call to action: “Check your vision - Drive Safe”. The campaign was rolled out across EssilorLuxottica’s business networks, in an effort to reach the widest possible audience.

It is our collective responsibility together with eye care professionals to share the call to action with consumers across the world, contributing to safer roads”, said Paul du Saillant, Deputy CEO of EssilorLuxottica.

Vision is vital on the road. With up to 90% of the information needed on the road coming through the eyes, good vision is critical for drivers, bikers, cyclists and pedestrians to take safe and appropriate decisions. However, awareness and access to solutions remain overall low: Studies show that accurate vision and glare management are largely under-addressed, with 68% of regular drivers admitting their vision is not perfect for driving or riding in full safety at night and 46% of them during the day. Moreover, 70% of people confirm their vision is hindered by sunlight and 30% by cars’ headlights at night.

In line with its efforts to promote good vision on the road, through its subsidiary Shamir Optical Industry, the Group introduced Shamir Driver Intelligence, an innovative optical lens which provides optimal vision under any driving conditions, for professionals, as well as passionate and everyday drivers. The new lens solution is designed to enable sharp and clear vision with less glare – day and night and in low light conditions and increased road awareness with exceptionally wide and clear visual fields. It adjusts to changing light, eye fatigue, and improves reaction time, leading to enhanced performance on the road.

Following a period of intensive R&D, with myriad measurements using elements of artificial intelligence (AI), professional driver trials and feedback from Shamir’s optical performance partner, BWT Alpine F1 Team, Shamir developed its driver-dedicated lenses. After being tested on everyday drivers and professional racing drivers, the feedback and lens performance results provided a successful proof of concept. Shamir Driver Intelligence comes as a set of two pairs of glasses, available as Single or Progressive Vision – “Sun” for daylight and “Moon” for nighttime driving, in order to provide uncompromised optimal vision for all conditions.
